Plan your education.
Understand your funding.
Prepare for an education loan discussion with a clear study budget, an organised document checklist and an understanding of borrower responsibilities.
Explore the questions to ask about collateral, co-borrowers, guarantees, loan agreements and repayment before making a financial commitment.
This page provides preparation guidance. Loan approval, pricing, security and disbursement are determined by the lender.
Understand the funding route.
A loan must be assessed against your actual programme, institution, study destination and financial circumstances.
Secured education loans
A lender may require an acceptable asset as security. Asset ownership, title, valuation and the lender’s policy affect whether it can be accepted.
Collateral-free loans
Some products do not require asset security for eligible applicants. This does not automatically remove co-borrower requirements or repayment obligations.
Family funds & borrowing
Consider the confirmed funds available, the funding gap and the repayment burden. A lender may require a contribution from the borrower.
Scholarships are separate from loans. Do not treat an unconfirmed scholarship as available funding. Check whether a scheme covers your institution and whether it applies to studies in India or overseas.
Look beyond tuition fees.
Prepare an itemised estimate. Whether each expense can be financed depends on the lender and product.
Academic costs
Tuition, institution fees, books, equipment and programme-related expenses.
Living costs
Accommodation, food, local transport and essential daily expenses.
Travel & preparation
Travel, insurance, visa-related expenses and initial settling-in needs.
Also allow for expenses that the lender will not finance, exchange-rate changes and the timing of payments.
Organise your documents before applying.
This is a planning checklist, not a universal lender requirement. Obtain the lender’s current checklist and submit documents through its approved process.
1. Student identification and academic documents
- Identity, address and photographs as requested by the lender.
- Passport and relevant travel documentation where applicable.
- School and higher-education marksheets or transcripts.
- Degree, provisional or completion certificates, where available.
- Relevant test results and records explaining gaps or prior study.
2. Admission and study-cost documents
- Admission or offer letter, including any conditions.
- Programme title, duration, campus and intended intake.
- Official fee schedule and payment deadlines.
- Estimated living expenses and other requested cost evidence.
- Confirmed scholarship or sponsorship documents, if applicable.
3. Co-applicant / co-borrower information
- Identification and proof of relationship, if requested.
- Income and employment or business records.
- Bank statements for the period specified by the lender.
- Details of existing financial commitments, as requested.
- Consent for lender verification and any required credit assessment.
4. Income evidence: salaried or self-employed
- Salaried applicants: requested salary records, employer details and tax records.
- Self-employed applicants: requested business evidence, financial statements and tax records.
- Other income: evidence of the source and continuity accepted by the lender.
- Ask which periods and formats are required; do not assume every product uses the same checklist.
5. Collateral documents, if security is required
- Ownership and title records for the proposed asset.
- Existing charge or encumbrance information, as applicable.
- Property approvals, tax records or other asset documents requested by the lender.
- Asset-owner participation and consent where required.
- Documents required for the lender’s legal review and valuation.
6. Guarantor and additional documents, where required
- Guarantor identity and financial information requested by the lender.
- The actual guarantee terms and responsibilities for review before signing.
- Additional records needed to resolve missing information or application conditions.
Initial NGC enquiry: share only your planning details. Do not enter Aadhaar, PAN, passport or bank account numbers, passwords or OTPs in this form. Document submission should follow an agreed, appropriate channel.
Co-borrowers, guarantors and collateral.
These terms describe different roles. Read the actual documents to understand the responsibility attached to each signature.
| Term | What to clarify before proceeding |
|---|---|
| Student borrower | Who is named as borrower, what repayment obligations apply and when payments begin. |
| Co-applicant / co-borrower | Whether the person is joining the loan contract and accepting repayment responsibility. Do not assume the role is only a reference. |
| Guarantor | The scope, duration and circumstances of the guarantee. A guarantee can create financial obligations; obtain an explanation of the terms. |
| Collateral owner | What asset is offered, who owns it, which documents must be signed and the consequences if the secured obligations are not met. |
| Collateral-free | Which security requirements are waived and which borrower or co-borrower obligations remain. |
| Government credit guarantee | Whether the particular loan qualifies and whom the scheme protects. Do not treat scheme coverage as debt forgiveness. |
Ask the lender to explain liability, recovery provisions and release conditions in language you understand. Where the obligations are unclear, obtain independent advice before signing.
Identify the document—not just its title.
“Bond” may refer to different arrangements. It is not a single standard document required for every education loan.
Loan agreement
Review the borrowing terms, repayment commitments, fees, security arrangements and events that may trigger lender action.
Guarantee or surety undertaking
Confirm who is guaranteeing what, whether liability is limited, how long it continues and how release is documented.
Scholarship or employment bond
A scholarship or employer sponsorship may carry separate service, completion or repayment conditions. Review it separately from the loan.
Financial sponsorship declaration
An institution or authority may ask for a sponsor’s declaration. Ask what evidence is needed and do not assume it replaces the lender’s documents.
Mortgage, pledge or security document
Check the asset being charged, the obligations secured, applicable costs and the procedure for release after settlement.
Investment bonds as proposed collateral
These are financial assets, not service bonds. Their acceptability and security value depend on the lender’s policy.
Before signing: ask for the completed document, read every obligation, clarify blank or unclear fields and retain copies. This page does not provide a standard bond or guarantee template.
Questions beyond the interest rate.
Interest and resets
Is the rate fixed or floating? What determines changes? Ask for the repayment illustration and total-cost disclosures available for the product.
Moratorium treatment
A payment holiday does not necessarily mean no interest. Ask whether interest accrues, must be serviced or is added to the balance.
Margin contribution
How much must you contribute, and when? Confirm which expenses are financed and which must be paid separately.
Fees and other charges
Ask about processing, legal review, valuation, insurance, security creation and other applicable costs.
Sanction and disbursement
An approval letter can carry conditions. Check what must happen before funds are released, to whom and in which instalments.
Repayment and changes
Review EMI commencement, tenure, early repayment terms and the process if your course, intake or circumstances change.
Stress-test the plan: consider delayed employment, higher living costs and exchange-rate changes. Do not rely on unconfirmed overseas earnings to cover mandatory expenses.
From study budget to lender review.
1. Confirm your study plan
Identify the institution, programme, duration, intake and admission status.
2. Calculate the funding gap
Separate confirmed personal funds, confirmed awards and the amount you need to borrow.
3. Obtain lender requirements
Ask about product suitability, co-borrower conditions, security and documentation.
4. Prepare an accurate application
Submit the lender’s required records and resolve missing information through its approved channels.
5. Review the written offer
Understand pricing, conditions, obligations, costs and repayment before accepting.
6. Plan disbursement and records
Coordinate due dates, required contributions and payment instructions. Keep copies of the final documents.

Frequently asked questions.
Does NGC approve or guarantee education loans?
No approval is issued through this page. The lender determines eligibility, terms, security and disbursement. Confirm NGC’s available assistance and any service charges before proceeding.
Does collateral-free mean no co-borrower?
Not necessarily. Ask the lender which security and co-borrower requirements apply to the specific product.
Is a bond compulsory for every student loan?
No single bond applies to every loan. Identify whether you are being asked to sign a loan agreement, guarantee, security document or separate scholarship or employment undertaking.
Is the study period interest-free?
Do not assume this. Confirm how interest is treated during study and any repayment holiday, and whether unpaid interest is added to the balance.
Does loan sanction guarantee a visa?
No. Loan approval and visa decisions are separate. Check the destination’s evidence requirements and the conditions attached to the loan.
What if admission is deferred or the visa is refused?
Inform the lender promptly and ask how the change affects sanction validity, disbursement, interest, cancellation and any refund arrangements. Do not assume charges are automatically refunded.
Does PM-Vidyalaxmi automatically cover overseas education?
No. The PM-Vidyalaxmi scheme concerns eligible quality higher education institutions in India. Do not confuse a scheme’s benefits with the wider range of education loan products. Check official eligibility for the specific assistance you seek.
Should I send financial documents through this form?
No. It collects a planning outline only. Confirm an approved document-submission channel with the lender and the scope of NGC’s assistance first.
